The four parts of Medicare, in plain English
Medicare isn't one thing — it's a menu. Here's what each piece does.
Part A
Hospital insurance
Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing, hospice, and some home health. Most people get this premium-free at 65.
Part B
Medical Insurance
Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. Has a monthly premium.
Part C
Medicare Advantage
An all-in-one alternative from a private carrier. Bundles A, B, usually D, and often dental, vision, and hearing.
Part D
Prescription drugs
Stand-alone prescription coverage from private carriers. Costs vary based on the drugs you take.
Medigap (Medicare Supplement)
Pairs with Original Medicare (A & B) to cover the gaps — deductibles, coinsurance, copays. Use any doctor that accepts Medicare.
Medigap vs. Advantage
Different trade-offs around cost, networks, and flexibility. The right choice depends on your doctors, your meds, and your budget — that's where we come in.
When can you enroll?
Timing matters. Missing a window can mean penalties for life.
INITIAL ENROLLMENT
7 months around your 65th birthday
3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after. Your one shot to enroll without penalty.
ANNUAL ENROLLMENT
Oct 15 – Dec 7 each year
Switch plans, change Advantage to Original, or add/drop Part D. Coverage starts Jan 1.
SPECIAL ENROLLMENT
Triggered by life events
Losing employer coverage, moving, or other qualifying changes can open a window outside the usual dates.
