Windstorm Insurance

When a storm hits and you live in a coastal area, windstorm insurance can be the difference between a roof over your head or financial hardship.

What is Windstorm Insurance?

Windstorm insurance provides coverage for damage from windstorms.

Windstorm Insurance Options

When a severe windstorm hits and you live in a coastal county in Texas, such as Brazoria or Galveston county, would your home or business be protected? Unless you have specifically added Windstorm Insurance, the answer is maybe not. Many homeowners and business owners’ insurance policies for coastal counties do not cover windstorms like hurricanes, hail, wind or tornadoes. However, when you request a quote for home insurance through Worthen Insurance Groupwe quote your policy through many different carriers and walk you through the best policy and coverage options.

Depending on several factors such as your zip code, the age of your home and the age of your roof,  we have carriers in Galveston County, Brazoria County and all Tier 1 Texas coastal counties that offer all-in-one policies, meaning you may not need a separate windstorm policy any more.

What can you do to protect against damage?
Keeping up with routine home maintenance is key. Ensuring your windows and doors are well sealed and your roof is in good condition are important steps to take toward protecting your property from being damaged in a windstorm. If your home is older, consider structural upgrades to your roof or foundation to protect it from wind damage. All homes should keep their roofs clean and free of debris. It is also important to keep all trees and
shrubs trimmed so that nothing is touching the roof. In the event of a natural disaster, however, there is only so much you can do. Having the right windstorm insurance might make all the difference.

A tropical cyclone causes damage by driving a wall of water onto the shore. So, if you live in a coastal area like one of the fourteen “Tier One” counties (including Brazoria, Galveston, and some parts of Harris county), protecting yourself with windstorm insurance is a necessity, not an option.

What types of coverage are available?
Dwelling – Offers windstorm (and hail) protection up to your policy limit for damage or destruction to your home. Includes detached structures like a garage or workshop up to 10% of the Dwelling coverage. Businesses and mobile homes can also be insured.

Contents – Provides insurance coverage for your belongings, such as appliances, furniture,  clothing, and other items in your home.  If you turned your home or business upside down, anything that would fall to the floor is considered Contents.

What is the right deductible?
Like most other forms of insurance, in the event of a claim, windstorm coverage is subject to a deductible. The deductible amount is commonly a percentage of the dwelling coverage. The higher your deductible, the lower the policy premium will be. The lower your deductible, the higher your policy premium.
